The book of faces wears many masks. I had laughed when sometime back a couple of my friends had refused to jump on the bandwagon for the very reason that facebook has been in news -privacy. Today I logged in my facebook to check the ‘new’ privacy setting. There was no change! I checked again just be sure. I found nothing. I expected facebook to carry an announcement and explanation about the new privacy settings.
Do they wish to hide the new privacy setting from users who may have been less alert? Perhaps.
When profit (or glory or power) is the motive and when the profit is not earned in a straightforward way (you get facebook free -facebook makes money through ads and shares user data for targeting ads) anything is possible. And each one of us is on his or her own.
I had stopped visiting facebook long time back. I found its interface irritating and settings obscure and confusing.
The magic of the user generated content (means photoos and scrabble updates) never enchanted me.
I was getting put off by the apps coming to me disguised as messages from my friends.
I think that the scales clearly tilt towards me saying goodbye to facebook and my friends. I am sure me and my friends can surely find other ways of connecting.
facebook suicide, eh?
I had to break my self-imposed silence on politics. I did it once. Here I go again.
When I read about the Afzal Guru’s file @Delhi Government story, I was angry. The Congress Governments at Center and State have been delaying the implementation of Supreme Court’s judgment. If the person convicted for an attack on the parliament gets Congress’ covert support, is it any surprise that the Naxalites and Maoists wage war against the state?
Read what M J Akbar writes about this in today’s Times of India
Akbar says that Congress is worried about the Muslim Vote that’s why it is delaying the decision on Afzal Guru. He calls it the worst case of ‘profiling’ of Muslims.
Now, profiling is a dirty word these days. But US Government has been profiling some religions and some nationalities ever since the 9/11. It has also been profiling educated Indians while granting VISAs. The US Government justifies ‘profiling’.
What about the Congress? If it fears loosing Muslim vote, it may have a justification. After all, a party that has ruled India for all but five years must have some extraordinary talent. Look at the party’s feats:
-a party claiming to have won India’s freedom without anyone else’s contribution
-a party that could extricate itself successfully from the horrors of partition and from the humiliation of the military defeat by China in 1962
-a party that condemned the nation for decades of license control Raj and deprivation
-a party that opposed proportional representation for Muslims for decades and partitioned the country for that reason and a party that now is prepared barter every type of reservation for staying in power
-a party that has perfected the art of using caste equations and that has condemned Indians to perpetual caste based thinking
-a party that has winked at countless number of cases of monumental corruption
-a party that has remained a ‘preferred’ or ‘default’ party of governance (in crude words ‘born to rule’) despite all above
Such a party like Congress just has to describe other parties as ‘communalist’ or ‘fascists’ or ‘anti-national’ or ‘pro-rich’ and the wise Indian people nod their heads and vote for Congress.
Such a party like Congress must have had its ears to ground while arriving at the profiling algorithm. Who knows?
I do not agree with profiling, but I strongly feel that it is Government’s duty to protect citizens, maintain law & order, and for that reason also punish those have been convicted of crimes.
But perhaps, the Congress is our culture (also known as Hindu or Indian culture). A culture with a history of over thousand years of subjugation. How can one oppose such a dominant culture?
Since there seems to be a lot of pain due to our premature (really?) exit and since everyone has been expressing grief, anger, anguish, surprise, humiliation and since everyone has been blaming The IPL and the parties, here are my views on the this burning subject.
Dhoni’s men exited the way they exited simply because they could not handle the short pitched stuff aimed at their rib cages and the skulls. This is not news. Barring the little master (I mean Sunil Gavaskar,. who played the West Indies’ feared pace quartet without a helmet and with that memorable hair style), only a rare Indian batsman could play the short pitched stuff with confidence. Even the new age wonders like Raina can not handle this.
Cause # 2: Sub-standard fielding (Remember Gayle being dropped half-way to his 95?)
Cause #3 : Our bowlers can not bowl surprise bouncers and they (spinners) can not flight the ball. Our only aim was to save runs and not to take wickets.
Non-reasons: Dhoni and co. were certainly not tired. They looked so well fed and well taken care of. And see, how fresh they looked in various commercials!
A deal with the Yadavs -include caste enumeration in the census, after the Home Minister has stated the difficulties involved and despite this being an abandoned practice since 1931 (deal for support in Parliament)
A deal with Mayawati – simple, just ask CBI to close the disproportionate assets cases against Mayawati (for support in Parliament)
A deal with Minorities for religion based reservations in jobs (for the eternal vote ATM)
A deal with DMK -just wink at A Raja through the open Rs 60,000 Cr telecom scam (again for support to the government)
We do not know what deals have been struck with Pakistan through Sharm–el–Sheikh Joint Statement, which delinked dialogue from terror, while the US and UK and much of the world blames Pak goverment for aiding and abetting terror camps (a Nobel Peace Prize for the PM?)
We do not know what deals were struck with China and US in Copenhagen Climate Summit.
Standby for : deal with Yadavs again in the form of separate parliament seats for OBCs and Minorities (why not?) in return for support to reservation for women (including quota within quota for OBC women) and support in the parliament.
A GK item: Nehru & Gandhi preferred partition of India to reserving parliament seats for Muslims. Jina was foul guy for demanding this. They ignored warnings of communal riots. So much was their opposition to the reservations based on religion.
Manmohan and his mentor are great visionaries and clean people.
