Many people have commented on our current attitudes towards women and how they contribute to the crimes. Right. They have also argued the need for social reforms. Right again.
In our obsession with the so called reforms, we have forgotten social reforms completely. We are still a very very feudal society. Add to that the culture of entitlements and sops. Where are the social reformers like Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Gopal Krishma Gokhale, Agarkar, and many others who made people think many generations back?
It is not the job of the government to reform society. Its job is to enforce laws. Politicians and media will only exploit what is there in our feudal society as expert marketers that they are. This is what we see. Social reforms, social agenda have to come from somewhere else. Only public opinion shaped thus will cause the governments to do something meaningful. If we continue to outsource social reforms and philanthropy to the government we are destined to sink further.
