Media. a web of lies, and machinations of Congress

Motivated Media manufactured a ‘divisive Modi’ image and almost succeeded in keeping us under a perpetual #dynasty.

As I continue to read Kishwar’s Modi, Muslims and Media I am astounded by media’s capacity for willful untruths. I have never been a fan of Indian main stream media, but I think I am yet to gauge the depth of the rot that has set in our media firmament under over six decades of Congress rule.

Go back to October 10, 2001. Modi had just been put in the CM’s position by the BJP. On this day he addressed Gujarati people for the first time as a Chief Minister. Kishwar gives English translation of his full speech in Gujarati. The speech outlines his agenda and priorities (Reconstruction of the Bhuj Earthquake and providing water \ power to farmers were the two of them). But his agenda goes much beyond problem solving. There is not a trace of divisiveness in it. On the contrary it has a wholesome vision of Gujarat’s progress.

When read the full text, I remembered many of Modi’s 2014 Loksabha election speeches -only development agenda. Broad strokes of imagination and attention to priorities in the short term.

His speech should be a primer for any Chief Minister. It is a master class. I request Madhu Kishwar to publish her English translation in full and share it widely.

It is clear as daylight that the Congress and the mains stream media manufactured ‘divisive Modi’ image only to serve their own purpose. In Kishwar’s words, “the demonisation of Modi started well before the riots of 2002. His troubles arose not because he came with a divisive agenda, but because he put an end to politics of divide and rule and plugged loopholes of corruption. He made enemies because of all this” Here also lies the genesis of 2002 riots.

Our main stream media, whose freedom we guard zealously,  almost succeeded in keeping Modi out of Prime Ministerial race. Recall the days just before and after his anointment as PM candidate and the intense smear campaign by media and intellectual stooges of Congress.

The web of willful and motivated lies and machinations still operates -think about the hate posts, riots, and murder and media coverage. Think about the insinuations and allegations that Modi \ BJP victory has encouraged ‘right-wing extremism’

Also think: had the above web of lies and machinations succeeded.. and we had as a PM a stooge or a novice or a crafty casteist or egotist politician. Shudder.

I strongly recommend to both those, who voted for and against Modi,  to read Modi, Muslims and Media.

The question remains: how to deal with the web of lies and machinations?

Of riots and media

It is illuminating to  learn from this Muslim businessman in Kishwar’s book. His account can be independently crosschecked with information in public domain to eliminate the possibility that he might have been sold out. The same person had become a celebrity for taking on Modi and filing a suit against him in International Court.

He says that people choose to forget that the 2002 riots were the culmination of an endless series of riots. The worst after the partition was in 1969 in Ahmedabad in which over 5000 Muslims were killed under the watch of Congress CM Hitendrabhai Desai. Entire community in his area was wiped out. Leave alone punishment, not a single chargesheet was ever filed against the culprits.

Another major riot 1985 preceded by several smaller riots. This went on for months. Congressman Madhavji Solanki was the CM and Rajeev Gandhi was the PM. Between 1985 and 2002, people had come to expect a riot every two or three months. At one time curfew lasted for 200 days.

During 1987 riots Amarsingh Chaudhary of Congress was the CM. 1990 riots happened when Chimanbhai Patel of Congress was the CM. Under his watch riots took place in 1992 as well.

In his words,  during every riot his workshop was burned down, insurance paid paltry sums and leading bank refused loan because of the M factor. The truth is that all earlier (Congress) governments remained indifferent to Muslims. After each riot Hindus helped Muslims. Hindus are 100% non-communal. Only because Hindus are 100% non communal Muslims continued to prosper in Gujarat. All those riots were politically engineered and the Congress party was the chief culprit.

Kishwar’s book tells the story of this businessman and how he decided to meet Modi in London after the riots of 2002 and confront him and what happened. I recommend that you read his account from the book itself.

He found that Modi was willing to listen and solve all problems. Modi set aside his other appointments in London and spent whatever time was needed with this group of Muslims. He was grilled and lectured on the need to ensure justice for all. Modi listened to all this and patiently explained what really had happened during the riots (Modi was just four months in CM job and had inherited an administration which was highly communalized. Please refer to the spate of riots in Congress Chief Ministers’ tenures and that no was even charged) and why it had happened. Modi showed willingness to do whatever needed to be done for help and for justice. Modi had also said that some accounts of violence were totally wrong. He had all the details.

According to this Muslim businessman, the 2002 riots were brought under control in just three days whereas the riots in all earlier regimes burned for months. (Can you draw parallels with the Muzzafarnagar riots in UP and Assam riots this year which raged for long time one under SP rule and the other under Congress rule? ) Modi had to deal with an administration which was thoroughly communalized. BJP, VHP, and Bajarang Dal had patronized Hindu dons while the Congress had patronized Muslim mafias. These organised criminal syndicates  functioned with impunity due to political patronage.

There are many accounts in this book how Modi helped and ensured protection of whosoever asked for help and how he was always approachable. (His office would call back to fix appointments) You must read them as well. There also are also many accounts of how Congress Chief Ministers of Gujarat and even PM Narasimha Rao cold shouldered Muslim delegations who had gone for help from time to time.  You must read this.

The Muslim businessman also explains how Modi’s Government removed the license-raj for schools and how this helped them in launching education drive among Muslims.

We know how Modi cut the troublemaker Togadia to size, how he prevented entry into BJP of the likes of Mutalik. We also remember how he asked his own party leaders not deviate from development agenda during an election campaign when he was under a vicious attack.

Media should have brought out the above facts impartially along with Modi’s alleged single failure related to 2002 riots. By playing up Modi’s alleged single failure very aggressively  and by suppressing many of his ground level achievements and by suppressing the role of Congress as a prime culprit for riots the main stream media has rendered a big disservice to us.

The main stream media are further compounding this by continuing with their improper reporting, for instance in case of recent disturbances in Pune. Media failed to ask the Police about their failure in controlling the mobs and of apprehending people with criminal records. Media failed ask the State Home Minister and Chief Minister about the riots and the murder. Media reports intelligence failure. Who should be held accountable for this?

The media have been spreading a ‘theory’ that BJP’s wining the election has emboldened the ‘right-wing fanatics’. What has the ‘secular’ state government been doing? Who encouraged killing of BJP workers in West Bengal? Who encouraged riots in Assam?

The problem for us citizens is that there is no counter to the media’s misinformation campaign.  We remain in dark until someone like Madhu Kishwar takes huge efforts to discover ground level facts, record them and present them. We voted for Modi despite media being against him, because of his huge and indefatigable campaign to reach us with his development agenda, his track record, his sincerity, work by BJP and RSS cadres and some concerted activism of his supporters on social media. But now he is and will be busy with governance. Who will tell us what really is happening?

The Congress has built a system of favors and disfavors which has ensured that only one voice is heard despite a large number of publications. This eco-system is deeply entrenched and it is at work even now.

The challenge to our freedom of expression is, ironically, the main stream media. The same media whose freedom we guard zealously. What should we be doing?

Bitcoin: how do we display the intangible?

A real dilemma of the museum curator!

British Museum blog

The Citi Money Gallery charts over four millennia’s worth of monetary history. The Department of Coins and Medals cares for over one million objects in the Museum’s collection and like any museum with a growing collection, the most pressing questions are what should we collect and where should we put it all? Yet a recent concern for me as the curator of the Citi Money Gallery is not which objects should I select from our vast collection for a new display, but whether we had any suitable objects at all. This may sound like the murmurings of an eccentric curator, but let me explain myself.

Media & Police: Why do you tag murderers, rioters as ‘Hindu’ Groups? and other questions

A Pune techie was brutally murdered by criminals. Almost all main stream media #msm are headlining the ‘Hindu outfit’ angle.

Question to Media: do you tag any other community this way?  Did you tag the terrible terrorist Kasab by his religion ? No. Did you tag Afzal Guru, Yakub Memon, and other terrorists by their religion? No. No way.

Those who killed the Pune techie were criminals -Police claim that Dhananjay Desai the leader of Hindu Rashtra Sena is a history-sheeter, named in 23 cases of extortion, rioting and other crimes will be questioned in this case. What has religion got do with it? Those who did it must be brought to the book and punished. That’s it.

Police haven’t yet investigated the case and media are shouting from roof tops about a ‘Hindu’ group.  Media even twisted Pune MP Anil Shirole’s statements insinuating that he ‘supports’ such acts. Read his statement on FB. This is clearly fear mongering. The kind of politics that Congress and leftists have been playing all the time. And media is party to this.

Questions to media (e.g. TOI): Why do you insist that the PM must condemn the murder? Any theories? Anyway even if you had remembered and  acknowledged that Narendra Modi’s Gujarat is the only state to bring rioters from all communities to book. and even  if you had remembered how Modi had disciplined his party man like Giriraj Singh, and even if you had remembered how he dealt with Togadia you would not have asked Modi to condemn the above act. You just had to widely publish these facts again as warning to the potential trouble makers who invoke religion for their criminal acts. Clearly media, you failed. And it was not an accidental failure. It was not a genuine error.

I have two questions to Police:

1. You knew that trouble would be  around given Saturday nights incidents. Why didn’t you round up of the likes of history sheeters Desai ? You have powers. You use them around Ganesh Fsetival. Clearly you failed in not only preventing Saturday troubles but you also failed to get activated despite that warning.

2. What happened to the culprit behind the offensive FB post? Media have forgotten the case. Have you found the man? Will you name his religion and religious organisation prominently? You have draconian powers give by Section 66 of Cyber security act 2002.  So no excuses please.

Give Pune Police’s track record particularly in Dabholkar murder case one wonders when you will be to frame charges against culprits in 1 and 2 above.

I remember that in Dabholkar murder case the Hon’able CM Prithiviraj Chavan had said that right wing conspiracy was behind it. He later changed his ‘thoery’see

So are we still at a theoretical stage in the  Pune techie muder case?

Can you depend on MSM to tell you the truth? To separate clear facts from theories?

Can you depend on Pune Police to prevent trouble of Saturday type and their aftermaths?

#MMM the Conflict Entrepreneurs! Modi Muslims and Media

Kishwar’s book) starts with a phrase coined by Mahesh Bhatt : ‘Conflict Entrepreneurs’. Some Conflict Entrepreneurs love conflicts -like war industries who need wars to survive. To thrive, war industries promote wars. Much of Africa’s internal strife is not internal at all, it is caused by war industry.

MMM gives many examples of India’s Conflict Entrepreneurs. These come mainly from the Congress and media and intellectual patronized by it. As a Muslim Entrepreneur starts opening his heart and tells his story one is reminded:

The worst riots in post-partition India happened in Ahmadabad of 1969. Over 5000 Muslims were killed in a massacre triggered by an incident involving a cow. Who was the Chief Minister then? Congress’ Hitendrabhai Desai. To paraphrase Salim Khan’s question: Does anyone remember this CM? Did the global cop US put sanctions on him like it did for Modi? No. Indira was the PM then.

Coming to the 2002 riots, it was not BJP or VHP vs Muslims. Many Congress workers were equally involved. The above Muslim  Entrepreneur personally knows many congressmen who took active part in the riots. There were lots of congressmen outside Ehsan Jafri’s house. Those found guilty of murders in Gulberg Society include congress workers. Most notable among these Congress’s Conflict Entrepreneurs was Himmat Singh Patel, the mayor of Ahmadabad then. He escaped punishment because Teesta will never name him just like she suppressed evidence collected by her right hand Rais Khan. Rasi Khan has said that she released only VHP \ Bajarang Dal \ BJP people’s photographs but suppressed  those which  implicate congressmen and those showing Muslim mobs attacking Hindus. Coming back to Himmat Singh Patel, The Mayor’s AMC demolished an 18th century mausoleum Waki Dakhani overnight taking advantage of the riots in which it was vandalized. It built a road there.  According to the above Muslim businessman Wali Dkhani was no less important than the Babri Masjid. He also said the Babri Masjid was in shambles when it was attacked. This Himmat Singh Patel is a blue eyed boy of Sonia.  He used to be around her in 2003 whenever she visited Ahmadabad. According this businessman Himmat Singh was the real Maut ka Suadgar for the local Muslims.

As the story unfolds, I expect that media’s  role in fanning conflicts will be laid bare.

We then will have to tie in all things and decide who are the real culprits.

Salim Khan: Truth, the first casualty of the media

I am borrowing the title from Salim Khan’s introduction to Modi, Muslims and Media.
It succinctly explains why mind stays exercised about state of media in our country. It also explains why I decided to read this book.
What better case study can there be in my efforts to understand media and what drives them?
The reasons Kishwar gives for researching  the subject are very relevant, even in the post election environment.
1. What’s unique about Gujarat riots and Modi that certain political groups have made it their do or die mission to finish him politically?
2. What was Modi’s personal role during the riots?
3. How come hundreds of Muslims have won Panchayat, Zilla Parishad and municipal elections on BJP tickets?
4. How valid is Modi’s claim that Gujarat development model is inclusive?
and many more…
I am looking forward to reading further. Will surely share with you my takeaways. Keep checking this space.
